MLJ Environmental is seeking a Quality Assurance (QA) Officer. This position is responsible for ensuring the quality of all project deliverables, mentoring and supervising staff, and acting as a technical resource for our Science, Sampling, and Data teams. The QA Officer will work closely with each of these teams and contribute to solving critical scientific and regulatory challenges.

We are a dog-friendly office and offer hybrid or remote work schedules.

Schedule and Salary

The annual salary is $85,000-$115,000 based on experience. Full-time employment benefits include health, vision, dental, and life insurance. Other benefits include paid vacation, holidays, sick leave, 401k, and profit-sharing plans.

Required Skills/Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program (ILRP) and EPA quality assurance guidelines.
  • Understanding of toxicology, hydrology, geology, and principles of risk assessment and risk management.
  • In depth understanding of California and Federal environmental laws, rules, regulations, and requirements including compliance activities required for clients.
  • Knowledge of effects of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials on the environment.
  • Knowledge of chemical reactions, fate, and transport of contaminants.
  • Understanding of laboratory best practices, quality assurance, and quality control principles.
  • Three years of experience as a Project Manager or an equivalent level of responsibility.

Job Duties

  • Lead responsibility for the quality of all project deliverables, ensuring consistency and adherence to quality assurance and control principles.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance protocols and corrective actions to address issues.
  • Mentor and supervise lower-level staff, including directing, training, and providing technical guidance.
  • Oversee sampling and safety procedures, ensuring compliance with Standard Methods, EPA methods, and ASTM methods.
  • Provide technical assistance to the team, act as a technical resource, and contribute to the preparation of guidance, policy, and regulatory documents.
  • Maintain communication with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that project deliverables meet regulatory requirements and client needs.
  • Ensure the timely completion of deliverables while maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions where needed, ensuring quality and compliance.
  • Collaborate with professionals across multiple disciplines to solve complex environmental issues and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with developing budgets and proposals, and follow project schedules to ensure that all project milestones are met.
  • Contribute to building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, clients, and partners.

Who We Are

MLJ Environmental is a small consulting firm based in Sacramento, California, with over 25 years of
experience safeguarding communities and natural resources. We simplify regulatory compliance
with innovative approaches to science and data. MLJ Environmental is seeking a motivated Field
Technician to join our team on an on-call basis. Our staff are innovative problem solvers who
thrive on new challenges. In this role, you’ll assist with the logistics and collection of
environmental water and sediment samples. This position offers flexible, part-time hours
depending on need, weather conditions, and project schedules, with shifts that may include
weekends and holidays (approximately 12-30 hours per month). Exceptional performance may
lead to full-time opportunities within MLJ Environmental. Please note that we are a dog-friendly
office.

Schedule and Salary

The Field Technician position is non-exempt, with variable hours each month. Due to the nature of
our sampling program, you may receive work notices 24-48 hours in advance. While we will aim to
provide more notice whenever possible, there may be short lead times depending on project
needs. Pay is $19-$25.00 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and organization of sampling supplies.
  • Clean and maintain field sampling equipment.
  • Clean and organize sampling warehouse and vehicles.
  • Collect water and sediment samples following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure samples are delivered to the appropriate laboratories in a timely manner.
  • Field sampling may involve 8-12 hour days in extreme weather conditions, including heat
    or rain/storms.
  • You must be able to carry equipment weighing 30 to 50 pounds, wear personal protective
    gear, and work in outdoor environments year-round.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with strong critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.
Familiarity with water quality issues and regulations in California is a plus. The ideal candidate will
be self-motivated, detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and able to work in small groups for extended
periods of time. A valid California driver’s license and a good driving record are required.
Additional skills that are a plus include:

  • Experience collecting surface water samples.
  • Familiarity with multi-parameter meters and stream flow measurement.
  • Experience with database entry.

In our continuous effort to enhance groundwater management practices, MLJ Environmental is seeking a Groundwater Solutions Consultant to join our team. This role is critical for the strategic outreach, demonstration, implementation, and overall client success of our flagship Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) software, Watermark. The ideal candidate will not only be pivotal in introducing Watermark to Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) but will also contribute to the ongoing enhancement and optimization of our software suite, ensuring our solutions exceed customer expectations and align with our business objectives.

Schedule and Salary

The compensation package includes an $80,000 base salary plus a $5,000 commission for each new Watermark (GSA) client contracted, as well as full-time employment benefits. Job Duties

As a Groundwater Solutions Consultant, you will:

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of Watermark, effectively communicating its value proposition to GSAs.
  • Identify and engage potential clients, scheduling and conducting product demonstrations tailored to their specific needs.
  • Attend and present at groundwater conferences, representing MLJ Environmental and Watermark.
  • Assist with the implementation of Watermark for new clients, ensuring a seamless transition and high client satisfaction.
  • Work closely with our product manager, business analyst, and software developers to provide feedback from the field that can guide future product enhancements.
  • Assist in the development of marketing materials, enhancing the visibility and appeal of Watermark to prospective clients.
  • Undertake market analysis to inform strategic decisions and product positioning.

Our staff are bright, innovative individuals who are interested in taking on new challenges within their careers. The selected applicant will be assisting with the logistics and collection of environmental water and sediment samples. This is an on-call position; days and hours will vary depending on need and weather and may include weekends and holidays (Approximately 10-30 hours per month). The successful applicant may have the opportunity to transition to full-time positions based on their performance and experience within MLJ Environmental. Please note that we are a dog friendly office.

Schedule and Salary

The Staff Scientist position is an on-call, non-exempt position and hours will vary each month. Due to the nature of our sampling program, the selected applicant may receive a call 24-48 hours prior to scheduling that work is available. We will do everything in our power to give more notice but that is not always possible. Pay is $19.00 per hour.

Example of Duties

Field sampling duties include the preparation of sampling supplies, cleaning and maintenance of sampling equipment, collecting water and sediment samples according to established standard operating procedures (SOPs), and assuring delivery of samples to appropriate laboratories. Sampling can involve 12 to 15-hour days and may be conducted under conditions of extreme heat or during rain events. You must be able to carry field equipment (30 to 50 pounds) and wear personal protective gear as needed and work in outdoor areas during all seasons.

We are looking for qualified candidates with exceptional critical thinking, verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of water quality issues and regulations in California is a plus. The successful applicant should be self-motivated with a keen attention to detail, safety conscious, able to exercise good judgement and common sense, able to work in a small group for extended periods of time, must have a valid California driver’s license and a good driving record. Familiarity with database entry, collecting surface water samples, using multi-parameter meters, and measuring stream flow is a plus.
